What
is the Alexander Technique? |
The
Alexander Technique is a practical method
which enables us to improve the way we
use our body. The Australian actor F.
M. Alexander (1869-1955) has discovered
that many health problems and disfunctioning
of the body are connected to faulty patterns
of posture and movement which we have
attained during our lives.
Especially
the almost universal habit of pulling
the head back and down into the neck,
and thus compressing and shortening the
spine, has a very bad influence on the
overall functioning of the body.
During Alexander Technique lessons we work on finding back
the balance of the head on the top vertebra of the spine, which
will enable the whole back to lengthen and to widen so it can
fulfill its original tasks again: giving support and flexibility
to the breathing and other vital body mechanisms, giving support
and flexibility to the arms and legs, and to divide the weight
of the body and all nescessary muscle tension efficiently throughout
the body.
The Alexander Technique is a non-manipulative method. We dont
directly work for a physical change in the student, the Alexander
Technique also doesnt give any physical exercises to
the student. In working together with the teacher at making
the mechanism of sensory appreciation of the body more reliable,
by becoming aware of posture and movement patterns, by learning
to recognize and to inhibite undue muscle tension, the body
will find back its natural balance step by step.
